Garden State Episcopal Community Development Corporation Wins Annual TD Charitable Foundation Housing for Everyone Affordable Housing Grant Competition

Garden State Episcopal Community Development Corporation Wins Annual TD Charitable Foundation Housing for Everyone Affordable Housing Grant Competition, Awarded $125,000 for the Creation of 60 Affordable Homes through the Adaptive Reuse of Two Former Churches

November 28, 2017 – Jersey City, New Jersey – Garden State Episcopal Community Development Corporation was recently awarded a $125,000 affordable housing grant through the TD Charitable Foundation’s Housing for Everyone grant competition. The grant will help support the adaptive re-use of two churches, one in Jersey City and another in Union City, which will be converted into much needed affordable housing.

Carol Mori, Executive Director, said, “As we strive to address affordability issues in Hudson County, finding available sites for development is a key challenge. With this effort, we will improve and preserve two historic sites, while meeting the housing needs of special needs populations and working class families that are cost burdened. ”

This year’s “Housing for Everyone” theme was Affordable Housing for All, focusing on initiatives that support the funding for safe, clean, physically accessible housing for all populations, including the elderly, new Americans, individuals with a mental or physical disability, families headed by a single parent or guardian, veterans and emancipated youth. Each year the theme is chosen based on housing needs identified by the Foundation across its footprint.

The Housing for Everyone grant competition is one of the TD Charitable Foundation’s most widely known signature programs. The competition invites local non-profit organizations from Maine to Florida to submit proposals outlining their plans and initiatives to support and provide affordable housing initiatives in their communities. Twenty-five organizations throughout TD Bank’s footprint from Maine to Florida were awarded a $125,000 grant for a total grant donation of $3.125 million in 2017.

To learn more about the program and how the grants are making an impact in the community, videos about past winners are available at "Own Who You Are". Applications for the Housing for Everyone grant competition will reopen in June 2018.

Recap: groundbreaking ceremony for St. John's Episcopal supportive housing project!

On April 28th, we celebrated the kickoff of the St. John's Episcopal conversion project with a formal groundbreaking ceremony at the site on the corner of Palisade Avenue and 15th Street in Union City. We are so excited to oversee the restoration of this historic 167-year-old site, and to add 13 units of much-needed supportive housing to the community!

In attendance were Mayor Brian P. Stack of Union City, Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, Bishop Mark Beckwith of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, Reverend Tom Murphy of St. Paul's Episcopal in Jersey City, Anthony Marchetta, Executive Director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, and Annmarie C. Uebbing, Director CPD of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development - Newark Field Office.

More about the project: This project involves the adaptive reuse of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Union City, New Jersey. Excluding the rectory and worship space, Garden State Episcopal CDC will develop 13 units of permanent supportive housing for people with special needs. The development plan works within the structure so as not to disturb neighborhood character and preserve the architectural history of the building. The unit mix will be 7 one-bedroom apartments and 6 studios. This project will focus on outfitting the church basement, school and gym into units that range in size from 350 to 680 square feet. The project involves vouchers from the Shelter Plus Program for 8 of the 13 units.

We would like to extend our endless thanks to all supporters and sponsors of this wonderful project!

"In Union City, we're not only excited about this project, we want all those projects - anything with affordable housing, special needs housing senior housing. We're all for it a thousand percent.  . . . that's what built Union City and made it what it is today. Hard-working people, hard-working families, people just trying to make their ends meet." - Mayor Brian P. Stack

Congrats to proud new Jersey City homeowner Reverend Bertha Reels!

New Homeowner Testimonial

I would sincerely like to thank GSECDC for the opportunity to become a first time home buyer in Jersey City.  A few years prior, to purchasing my new home, I did not believe that I would experience home ownership in Jersey City. Real estate in Jersey City had climbed, so drastically; that I felt that owning a home in a city that I love was out of my reach.  Then along came GSECDC with affordable housing right in Jersey City.  I was so excited when I saw the huge sign on Cator Ave, which read, new 2 family affordable homes for sale.  I quickly gave GSECDC a call and the staff at GSECDC began to immediately assist me in making my dream come true.  I was easily walked through the process by professional staff and I am now the proud owner of a beautiful, new 2 family home.  I love my gorgeous kitchen with its stainless steel appliances, spacious living room/dining room, laundry room, 3 bed rooms and two large bathrooms. The enormous back yard allows me to have great cook outs, while entertaining my large family and friends.  I just want to say thank you GSECDC for helping me to fulfill my dream as a home owner and landlord.
